October 28 NB Standard Times Article
OUR VIEW: Strong legislative slate
"Westport Selectman Paul A. Schmid III, a Democrat, is the best person for the job. A sharp mind and unique personality, Schmid is a Harvard-educated farmer whose family has owned River Rock Farm, currently a producer of organic beef, since 1962. He has a wealth of experience in local government, serving on the Finance Committee and a variety of other town committees over the years before he was elected to the Board of Selectmen. His district includes part of Fall River, and he would like to help the city to promote tourism, citing the positive influence of tourism on New Bedford. Jobs are the most immediate issue, he said, and he supports SouthCoast economic development objectives like commuter rail, the biotechnology park and casinos. Schmid's familiarity with the issues, his business and government experience, and his education - he holds an MBA - make him an excellent choice."

Schmid will keep Westport on track

I am writing in support of Paul Schmid's candidacy for the Westport Board of Selectmen. As a thirteen year member of the Westport Finance Committee I have had the opportunity to work with Paul for six of those years in which he was elected and served three years as it's Chairman.

During those years I have always found him to be a man of principle and integrity who had the ability to integrate the concerns of all the nine members while dealing with the needs of 54 budgets and the fiscal constraints of diminishing revenues so that we could recommend a balanced budget to the Town Meeting.

If elected to the Board of Selectmen, I believe he will bring these same traits to that Board.

I served under Paul's leadership on the Finance Committee for three years. I found his leadership constructive, consensus building, both strategic and tactical without contention with fiscal responsibility and always a stake in good government.

Paul Schimd brings an unusually fine background to the contest for next Selectman from both the perspective of formal education and knowledge of Westport. Living for decades among those with demonstrated agricultural interests and also environmental concerns, Paul is a leader in preserving the long culture of Westport as a beautiful place to live now and for our grandchildren.

Others have stated, and I concur, that Paul learned the nuts and bolts of town financial operations as he served successfully on the Finance Committee. I believe Paul is dedicated to the disciplines of a balanced Town Budget and all that such disciplines require to preserve value for taxpayers.
